Travel training

Because transportation looks different in every part of Oklahoma, Mobility Managers work locally to connect people with available services, identify transportation barriers, coordinate resources, and help individuals better understand their mobility options. Travel Training is one way Mobility Management helps build transportation independence.

What Is Travel Training?

Travel training is individualized instruction that helps people learn how to use transportation safely, confidently, and as independently as possible. The Federal Transit Administration describes travel training as training for individual users that builds their awareness, knowledge, and skills regarding public and alternative transportation options available in their communities.

Travel Training for Children & Youth with Disabilities

Through partnerships with the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the Oklahoma Transition Council (OTI), Oklahoma's Mobility Management Program is working to expand travel training opportunities for children and youth with disabilities.


Travel training provides individualized, hands-on education to help young people understand how transportation works where they live. Depending on the community and the individual's needs, this may include learning how to:

  • Identify available transportation options
  • Plan a trip
  • Schedule or request transportation
  • Understand fares, schedules, stops, and service areas
  • Use public or community transportation safely
  • Build confidence and independence while traveling


The goal is bigger than learning how to ride a bus. Transportation can be a pathway to education, employment, health care, community participation, and greater independence.


Planning for Life After High School

Families, students, educators, and transition professionals can also explore resources through Plan Your WAY Oklahoma, which supports youth with disabilities as they prepare for life after high school.
